Im just curious about this one. Are ati's and nvidia's claims correct when they say that their newest laptop videocards can be upgraded? Does it connect to the laptop via somthing simlair to an agp slot?

I can't respond to the question about nVIDIA, but the ATI Flexfittm technology that they are advertising simply does not work at this time.

Laptop sellers who are claiming upgradeability are relying on the replacement of the entire motherboard, not just the video card, and the cost seems to range from about $450 to $500. Now for a top end desktop video card that seems like a reasonable enough price, so why not tout it as a video card upgrade when it is actually a full motherboard upgrade. Well, it accomplishes the same thing...so I guess the answer is why not. In addition, with a full motherboard upgrade you will also get any improvements that might have been made to the motherboard.

Now, within a year, or maybe even 6 months, we are hopeful that the technology will work, and the price of upgrading just the GPU will come down to within reason.

That is what I was trying to say in my lengthy post above...that is it will take a full motherboard upgrade to upgrade the video card.

By the way, the problem with a full motherboard upgrade is that that can force you to buy a new CPU or new memory as well.

Basically, laptops right now just aren't as upgradeable as desktops.
