I can't respond to the question about nVIDIA, but the ATI Flexfittm technology that they are advertising simply does not work at this time.
Laptop sellers who are claiming upgradeability are relying on the replacement of the entire motherboard, not just the video card, and the cost seems to range from about $450 to $500. Now for a top end desktop video card that seems like a reasonable enough price, so why not tout it as a video card upgrade when it is actually a full motherboard upgrade. Well, it accomplishes the same thing...so I guess the answer is why not. In addition, with a full motherboard upgrade you will also get any improvements that might have been made to the motherboard.
Now, within a year, or maybe even 6 months, we are hopeful that the technology will work, and the price of upgrading just the GPU will come down to within reason. _________________ Donald Stratton

I got curious and took mine apart yesterday; the videocard was built into the motherbaord; not very upgradeable _________________ Our eyesight is here as a test to see if we can see beyond it. Matter is here as a test for our curiosity. Doubt is here as an exam for our vitality.

That is what I was trying to say in my lengthy post above...that is it will take a full motherboard upgrade to upgrade the video card. _________________ Donald Stratton

By the way, the problem with a full motherboard upgrade is that that can force you to buy a new CPU or new memory as well.
Basically, laptops right now just aren't as upgradeable as desktops. _________________ Looking for info or want to share some info on your laptop?
