What are fingerprint scanners? Never have to remember another password
18 July, 2006 in Laptops - General
Have you noticed how many passwords you have to remember these days? Passwords for each bank and credit card account, each forum, each online vendor you purchase from, instant messaging, and email. Sadly, many of us respond to that deluge of passwords by using the same password for each login. This is bad. I mean, B A D. It's even worse if that password doesn't have numbers or punctuation, like "freddie". A cracker will have that password in no time.
So what can you do? One option is a fingerprint scanner. The idea is that the fingerprint scanner software stores all those usernames and passwords, and when a login prompt appears, all you have to do is press your finger against the scanner, and it will log you in. This way you can make sure each password is unique, and they can be really hard passwords you don't have to remember, like "$3Kfl98sJ&21#". In fact if there are multiple users of the same laptop, each of them can log into Windows by pressing their finger against the scanner, and it will automatically log them on. They can each have their own folders and files encrypted so that other users cannot open them.
One thing to remember is that if you haven't also written down your user ID's and passwords in a safe place and your computer ever crashes, or is lost or stolen, you will lose all of your user ID's and passwords, so you shouldn't trust it completely.
Some laptops now include a fingerprint scanner, along with OmniPass, the program that stores all those usernames and passwords. Those laptops are the PowerPro L 8:14, PowerPro L 8:15, Crown P 14:2, and the Crown P 15:2.
